I am a pianist, organist and occasional clarinettist. I have been a Church organist for almost 50 years at Haggs Parish Church, St Michael's Linlithgow and Fairmilehead Parish Church here in Scotland. Hence much of my work has been produced for worship. You can find it if you select "Music Links" from the menu button on the left(PC) or in the top left corner above(phone). For best results with the sound files, download before playing.
I studied Music and Mathematics at Glasgow University before embarking on the dual careers of Investment Manager during the week and Church Organist at weekends.
I started playing Church Organ at the age of 15 in 1974 in Haggs Parish Church. After marrying Anne and moving house to Linlithgow in 1980 I became involved in St Michaels Parish Church there, initially as assistant organist to Tom Inness and then as Organist and Choirmaster from 1989 to 2018. During that time we produced many televised services and Songs of Praise, as well as many choir concerts and Christmas Lessons and Carols. I have played recitals in Ayr Town Hall, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the Holy Rood in Stirling. In September 2018 I was delighted to accept the offer of the post of Organist at Fairmilehead Parish Church in Edinburgh, commencing in November 2018. I have discovered new musicians to work with and some of the "Instrumental" items, as well as the "Praise Group" songs have been written for Fairmilehead.
When the church first reopened after lockdown at Easter 2021, services took the form of meditations with prayers and music(no singing). The Meditations were written for these services, but also later when we continued the practice after reopening fully, with short pieces of reflective music following the sermon, based on the hymn following the sermon. I left Fairmilehead after 4.5 very happy years at Easter 2023 - I'm hoping to help other organists by providing locum support.
Current playlist: Lockdown Tier 4/Thine be the glory/O righteous God(ps 4)/Abide with me/Servant King/Ascension 2023/Stuttgart/Just as I am/Will you come and follow me/Three meditations for Good Friday/The Lord's my shepherd/Love is the touch/Love unknown/Spirit of God Skye Boat Song/Rowan tree/Taladh Christe and Auld lang Syne/I want Jesus to walk with me/East Acklam /Crimond/Brother, sister/Holy Holy Holy/Through the Love of God
Over the years I have written many short pieces to accompany Sunday School exiting based on children's songs, as well as choral pieces, solo piano and organ pieces and some solo song settings. I wrote the music for Alzheimer Scotland's "May you forget me not" song and continue to support the charity.
My music includes congregational settings of "The Lord bless you and keep you" as well as Choral Amens. Please download and use with my blessing! I would love to hear from you - if you have any musical gaps that need filling, songs that need set to music please let me know!

Mendelssohn also lived in Leipzig with his family and his house is maintained as a museum to him and his sister Fanny, who was also a prodigious musician, and also sadly short lived.
The Marienkirche spires by night - where Buxtehude played, and Bach and Handel(amongst many others) visited.

A Pavane - a modern twist on the stately Renaissance dance........(dynamics are set at ppp to get the best piano sound from my laptop)
For Hogmanay - or moments of parting - a straightforward Toccata on "Auld Lang Syne". Written for Hogmanay 2023 which falls on a Sunday.
A setting for fun of the simple but powerfully uplifting poem "Smiling is infectious" by the much-loved Spike Milligan (1918-2002). Written at the end of WW2 in 1945, for me it emphasises that despite geopolitics, and everything else, we're all the same really - and a smile is a universal signal of shared humanity which can achieve so much. It's very short😁😁😁 Go to "Music Links " => "Songs, Amen & Blessings".
Sibelius' birth house in Hämeenlinna - he lived here until he was two when his father, a doctor, sadly died suddenly from Typhus and plunged the family into bankruptcy.
Sibelius' grandmother's square piano - who he lived with after his father died and learned to play music.
The waterfront at Lahti with the Sibeliustalo(Concert Hall) in the middle - a reconditioned factory
The Sibeliustalo
A bust of Sibelius alongside a ceramic fireplace.
While in Finland, we stayed near Mäntsälä, between Lahti and Helsinki. Some of our party enjoyed dancing to the tango rhythm and this inspired Tango Mäntsälä.......
A new arrangement for Piano Solo - find this in "Music Links => Piano Pieces"
Breathe on me, Breath of God - a new setting for Pentecost 2023 of the beautiful words by Edwin Hatch(1835-99). This is for Soprano, Alto and Bass/Baritone - the dynamics are set to get the best sound out of Sibelius - in real life they would be louder! There are 4 verses - 1 and 3 set out the melody in full harmony, 2 introduces a more polyphonic style, and 4 acts as a coda, building on the short ending phrase "Breathe on me." from the first three verses. Go to Choral Pieces in Music Links.
Easter Day 2021 - first time back on the organ at Fairmilehead for over a year - good to be back! Here's a couple of Easter favourites I recorded for a friend who couldn't be there
